Bike Mechanics needed in our Community Workshop!

Are you great at fixing bikes?

Broken Spoke need bike mechanics to run our repair workshop, fixing bikes and providing customer service, keeping the workshop stocked and safe. The role also covers refurbishing and selling secondhand bikes.

We’re looking for mechanics with either a couple years’ professional experience under their apron, and/or Cytech, City & Guilds, or equivalent level 2 qualification (…level 3 would be amazing!).

We also need you to be friendly and approachable, and able to challenge stereotypical views on how people are made to feel comfortable in bike shops/workshops.

Want to help share the knowledge and enable others to learn how to fix their bike?

Teaching is Broken Spoke’s main reason for existence. However we paused all teaching back in March and it’s only now making a slow and cautious return. We hope to open our DIY Workshops this Autumn, led by qualified mechanics, alongside enthusiastic volunteers. Running our DIY Workshops is an additional role for mechanics at Broken Spoke. Candidates wanting to fill this additional role would need to bring A LOT of patience, kindness, and awareness of hands-off teaching styles & techniques to empower members of the public to learn to fix their own bikes.

Our workshop is about challenging the power imbalances that are all too common between mechanics and customers. Our mechanics don’t treat bike repair knowledge as a closely guarded secret, making customers feel like they should know more than they do, but instead celebrate the learning opportunities presented by mistakes while also making sure people stay safe.

Are you a bike mechanic who wants to make a difference?

Broken Spoke is a community bike project in Central Oxford. Our staff and volunteers help people from across the city to fix and ride their bikes, and get as many people on bikes as possible through courses, training and events. Broken Spoke is for everyone and we are actively working with marginalised groups across the city to make cycling an option for anybody. Broken Spoke is run on the co-operative principles – an important factor in what it means to work with us. We’re as much about community building and inclusivity as we are about bikes. As one of our founders puts it;

“Broken Spoke creates a safe learning space that doesn’t just allow people to defy the expectations they have of themselves or that others have of them, it smashes power structures that put them there in the first place”

Part time/flexible working hours. Our ideal candidate would work 2 days a week, hours negotiable, but any and all working patterns considered.

Pay: Oxford Living Wage (currently £10.21 per hour)
