Volunteers play such an important role in the work we do here at Broken Spoke. And you don't need mechanics skills to get involved! Our aim is to build an inclusive community, nurture and develop skills and have fun!

We have a wide range of volunteering opportunities, and will help you find the right volunteering path for you.

Ways to volunteer

There are plenty of ways to volunteer, from hands-on workshop based activities, to community facing outreach projects and advisory roles.

Whether you want to hone current skills or learn something new, we are here to support and help you thrive in your volunteer journey.

You don't have to know anything in order to volunteer. I think you just have to be interested. A lot of the time, you're not even doing the work, you're helping somebody else; so you get to see how all of these mechanical things work.

As you do that, you'll learn how to fix bikes bit by bit.

One of my favourite things is when I work here on a DIY workshop day, is every time I go, every now and again, you just hear someone cheering because they've got something and there's such an energy about it.

I think it's absolutely amazing.

I met a lot of my friends through Broken Spoke who were mechanics when I was in the DIY workshop.

Broken Spoke has socials or social rides, and I met people and other volunteers through those and just started going on other bike rides with them. And that brought me a lot of friends.

It's somewhere that adds to my life. I look forward to it when I'm in a group, you meet and talk to different people.

When I worked, I looked forward to retirement. When retirement came along, it wasn't the deal I thought it was, and a lot of people retire and they go into a cocoon. I live in a sheltered accommodation - it gives me something to live for.
