Broken Spoke update – Covid-19

Monday 13th April

Dear beloved friends and supporters of The Spoke,

As promised, here is another update on our situation amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Since we have closed the workshop and halted all our normal activities (as of 24/03/2020), we have lost our main sources of income, and as a result we are unable to continue paying staff wages during this time. We are taking steps to ensure that we are able to bounce back once we reach a state of ‘new normal’.

We have decided to furlough over half our staff in order to claim 80% of their wages from the government. As per the guidance from the government, furloughed staff are not permitted to do any work or provide any services (even on a voluntary basis) to the organisation. This means our capacity is massively reduced.

We are taking the ongoing spread of Coronavirus incredibly seriously and believe the risk of spreading the virus while undertaking our normal work (even bike sales & repairs) would be too high a risk to our staff, volunteers and customers. During lock-down, demand for our work is greatly reduced, that we can’t justify carrying on.

This is for us, as it is for so many, going to be an incredibly difficult time as an organisation. As a small community project, our ongoing survival will depend on your support.

If you would like to donate and support Broken Spoke recover from this, you can do so, here.

With warm hearts, peace and carefully washed hands,
The team at Broken Spoke
